Colours, Countries and Nuclear Fallout

I read the original tale of Red Riding Hood written by Charles Perrault, a French author, as well as reading the Grimm Brother's version from Germany. I thought to myself about the significance of how the country would affect the picture portrayed in the story, for example how clothes and scenery would possibly differ for each country. The colour red traditionally shown in Little Red's costume has connotations of the Russian Soviet flag.

Following the post apocalyptic theme I have been considering, the thought of Russia progresses to accounts of the Chernobyl disaster

"In the early hours of 26 April 1986, one of four nuclear reactors at the Chernobyl power station exploded.
Moscow was slow to admit what had happened, even after increased radiation was detected in other countries. The lack of information led to exaggerated claims of the number killed by the blast in the immediate area.
Contamination is still a problem, however, and disputes continue about how many will eventually die as a result of the world's worst nuclear accident." (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/guides/456900/456957/html/nn1page1.stm)

After the horrific accident and mass evacuation, the wildlife soon started to inhabit the abandoned city. The massive doses of radiation led to genetic mutations such as giant wolves and cattle with extra limbs.
